(OK, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all of that. Bah, humbug, I say! Let’s get on with things.)
I finally bought myself a DSLR. I’ve been wanting one for the last few years. I’ve now “graduated” from this:

I’m so excited, I can’t resist broadcasting my acquisition of this new toy. I didn’t buy the kit lens, but the new Tamron 270 zoom, which is smaller and longer (and more expensive) than Canon’s 135 that comes with the camera.
I’ve forgotten basic photographic principles, having become lazy with the little P&S, but my dissatisfaction with my own photography finally prompted me to buy the new camera. The money spent will now prompt me to review all those principles and learn the new ones which apply to digital SLR photography.
I’ve already found kindred photographic souls on Flickr, but I dare not join them until I can post some respectable images taken with the new camera. Maybe I’ll be able to do that within the week, insha’Allah.

Mabrook! You know I’m on Flickr! I too have a new Canon. I went to Istanbul a year ago with my PS. Can’t wait to return with my DSLR in March Insha Allaah.

So, how did you learn how to use that T2i? That’s the model I had my eye on for a long time, but then the salesman told me the 60D was even faster than the Rebel, and it had a nice articulating LCD screen, as well as a few additional features I don’t yet understand, so I found myself buying the 60D. I hope I haven’t gone overboard.
My concern about traveling is that these cameras are big. They need a little muscle, and they present a good target for thieves. Be careful!
You could hardly go back to Istanbul with a P&S, though, knowing you’ve got a T2i sitting at home, no?

Well it was quite a learning curve! I took a non credit course on digital photography at our local university. Also took one for PhotoShop. They never had all of this when I went to art school back in the late 60s lol. I keep it on “program” a lot as that setting is said to be more versatile than “automatic.”. On these settings it’s like having a bit PS lol. Yes they are much bigger but I got a soft ergonomic neck strap which makes it feel like the camera is hardly there. I don’t know anything about the model you have but I’m sure you’ll like it. You practically can’t go wrong with Canon. Especially for color. I have two Niko PS which I like. As for bigness. It’s actually better for my MS and arthritis. I have huge issues with fine motor control and I shake a lot with those little cameras. At the end of the day, unless one is a professional and needs special features, it’s all about the photographer and not so much about the camera. Small differences can be addressed in Picasa or PhotoShop.

Having a “big PS” correction
Oh, Safiyyah, you are so generous! Yes, these cameras involve a learning curve. While I’m very happy to be shooting with an SLR again after thirty years away from one, these digital SLRs begin where the old ones left off!
Actually, the camera really is important, IMHO. I was spending so much time editing that I lost enthusiasm for realistic photos. I expect this new camera will give me better material to work with on the computer.

I have a little crap camera at the moment. I am planning to buy myself a nice Canon for my graduation gift 🙂 I still have 2 more years! 😦 😦 lol

Issam, you are on top of things! I deleted the post five minutes after a posted it, partly because the formatting was not pleasing to me, but also because I wasn’t sure I really wanted to post it. Now that you have caught a glimpse, I’ll go back and fix it, then re-post it, but it wasn’t titled. Maybe “1440” was the number WordPress assigned to it.
I’ve been all caught up in the new camera; that’s why I’ve neglected the blog. There is so much to learn. It’s a versatile machine, with many more capabilities than I can keep track of at this stage of the game. I want to keep going, however, until I become proficient in its use.
In the past, I have purchased high-end electronics, and stopped learning how to use them before I could benefit by all the features for which I bought them in the first place. I vowed not to do that this time.
Actually, I could learn more with WordPress, too. There are things I could do with the blog that I don’t know how to do because I’ve been lazy to learn.

Glad that you are enjoying your experience with your new camera. I have been always extremely cautious with high-end electronics. That is why I could never benefit by all their features.
